Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
