An Account of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange lodging upon arrival, but once I got there, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend the evening in a place that was open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at the admissions interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
I must have looked lost since a female student saw me loitering in the city and inquired if I was OK. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.
In retrospect, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman letting a guy she had only just encountered crash at her place. In those days I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of human compassion. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
