Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Sparked the Dispute

The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in armed forces or intelligence roles.

"As we did, you all made an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Incensed Response

The recorded statement appeared to prompt a furious response from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another message, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives Answer

Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader released a combined declaration condemning the comments.

"Political violence has no place in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our United States with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these unhinged digital publications and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.

Representatives' Defiant Response

The representatives who participated in the video also issued a statement.

"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who love this country and swore an pledge to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "Every American must unite and censure the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."

Additional Governmental Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."

He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."

The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of the legislature advising troops to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in US history."

The Republican leader also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and determine all that."

White House Statement

During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."

"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the federal government who worked together to organize a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."

She said: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can result in casualties, it can cause disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
