The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
