Cyclone Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon highest-level hurricane as it turns in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing deadly sudden floods and mudslides.

The cyclone, which had wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean region and is projected to reach land by midweek, as reported by weather experts.

Warnings of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been issued as this storm produces up to thirty inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," residents have been told.

The cyclone is the 13th cyclone in the current Atlantic season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

A highest-level hurricane is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

While this storm is projected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 cyclone before arriving at Jamaica, authorities said there was "minimal real distinction in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it hits the nation.

With tropical storm-strength gusts and precipitation already expected ahead of it passes over Jamaica's central region - possibly even the city of Kingston - advisories state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and torrential rain are underway and will cause severe and deadly sudden floods and numerous mudslides," advised meteorological officials.

The country's head of government the official commented: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"Yet the most effective method to handle nervousness and any unease and anxiety is to remain prepared."

Locals are being told to fortify their houses with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to gather necessary supplies.

Broader Impact

Alerts are also in effect for parts of Haiti including the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and eastern Cuba, where this storm is projected to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Mudslides presently generated by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to local authorities.

The hurricane is predicted to cross the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and entering the open ocean.

By the time it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is predicted to have weakened to a Category 3 cyclone.
