Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
People have come together around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed official memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- After-conflict management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until all the hostages come back no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Activist one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the war to end in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis said additional dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the southern area, health workers said.
