Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
