Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

Last Thursday Trump said he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with sources suggesting Trump had urged him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the war on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he stated.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the present battle positions.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov stated on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday preceded speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he commented.
