Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a new film. The movie, however, may align so closely with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement rather than a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have collaborated to forge a tailor-made version of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” the nation from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. An adaptation based on a popular book sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The position was in essence a casting call with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the country in practice.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “007” may in part have been triggered by the actor's arrival as 007. His harder interpretation prompted local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
