Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

Background on Conviction
