Ukrainian Forces Hit Russian Oil Refinery With British Storm Shadow Cruise Missiles.
In a significant military action, Ukrainian forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil refinery. The attack occurred on Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military command.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the site. This marks another instance where Ukraine has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles against targets on Russian territory.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in southern Russia and is directly involved in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the War Front
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held productive discussions with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.
“It was a really good conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a messaging platform. “There are some new ideas on how to move toward a genuine peace closer, and it concerns formats, meetings, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the opposition movement, was given to six years in a penal colony.
This case are said to be based on an online post Udaltsov published backing another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the charges as fabricated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
Russian authorities indicated it is engaged with French authorities regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of spying.
An official stated that Russia has made an offer to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is closely following the situation, with all state resources mobilised to offer assistance and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is scheduled to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the reopening as “dancing on bones.” This project is part of a wider Kremlin effort to present its rule in occupied Ukraine, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of critics and property seizures from local residents.
It is expected to open by the month's end with a show of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the past two years.
