US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American armed forces carried out a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Actions
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.
Only on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amid Pressure
The administration has faced growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current government.
